Under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), health insurance coverage is available through a government-sponsored Health Insurance Marketplace as of October 1, 2013. Marketplace coverage is an option for people who are not eligible for health coverage from another source, such as through their employer or through their spouse's or domestic partner's employer. It is also an option for people who choose not to enroll in the employer-provided health coverage that is available to them.
The Marketplace enrollment period opens Tuesday, October 1, 2013, and closes Monday, March 31, 2014. Coverage purchased through the Marketplace between October 1 and December 15 will start on January 1, 2014.
