Work and Family Programs

Balancing work, home, family and personal commitments can be challenging and a major source of stress, particularly when personal concerns conflict with your job responsibilities. That’s where Work and Family Programs can help. Whether providing referrals to child and/or adult care, assisting you with parenting issues or offering counseling for personal and health issues, Work and Family Programs are designed to help you balance your commitments and responsibilities.

Each program has its own specific benefits. These programs include:

  • Family Resource Program;
  • Adoption Reimbursement Program;
  • Family Care Leave of Absence;
  • Leave of Absence for Care of Newborn/Newly Adopted Child; and
  • Flexible Work Arrangements.

Eligibility

If you are a U.S. employee who meets the particular program’s eligibility rules, you are eligible for the program. In most cases, family members are also eligible.

Coverage Options and Costs

Coverage Options

  • Family Resource Program: Offers practical advice, useful educational materials and referrals to local and national resources to help you better balance your work and family responsibilities. Program services include:
    • Child Care: Helps you locate, evaluate and manage quality child care and provides advice about parenting issues;
    • Education: Helps you with educational issues for your school-age children, including post-high-school education;
    • Adult Care: Helps you locate, evaluate and manage quality care for family members and provides advice about caring for older adult relatives;
    • Special Needs: Helps you locate, evaluate and manage quality care for relatives with a mental, physical, emotional or sensory disability;
    • Adoption: Helps you if you are considering adoption or are already an adoptive parent, through consultation and referral to adoption resources; and
    • Personal Issues: Helps you manage personal responsibilities.
  • Adoption Reimbursement Program: Provides you with up to $3,500 for eligible expenses associated with the legal adoption of a child under age 18;
  • Family Care Leave of Absence: Allows you to take a leave of absence without pay for up to 12 months within a two-year period to care for a family member with a serious illness or injury;
  • Leave of Absence for Care of Newborn/Newly Adopted Child: Allows you to take a leave of absence without pay for up to 12 months to care for your newborn or newly adopted child; and
  • Gradual Return to Work: Allows you, if business needs permit, to work part time for up to six months after you return from a Family Care Leave of Absence or a Leave of Absence for care of a newborn/newly adopted child.

Costs

There is no charge for services provided by the Work and Family Programs for eligible employees and their family members. However, you will be responsible for the cost of any services, such as child-care-center tuition or treatment by referred resources or healthcare providers. These expenses may or may not be covered by other benefit plans.

Many plans require preapproval before services are rendered. Check with your specific plan before receiving services or entering treatment.
